The John Edwards Campaign

In recent days, I've been watching the right-wing attack John Edwards because he hired two liberal female bloggers to his campaign. Now the fact that they are liberal women is enough for the (never been)right-wing to go crazy and attack them regardless of what they wrote in the past. The right-wing has found various posts that they have made, quoted them out of context, and claim that they are bigots or hate religious people or swear. Well, the right-wing (in particular the ones leading this charge) is full of racist bigots not worth the shit they create each day. (Oh no! Swearing, my virgin ears!)

John Edwards is now "in a bind" which should be easy to fix. The right-wing (who will never ever vote for him anyway) wants him to fire the two bloggers or else he is supporting their viewpoints. If he does, he will show the blogsphere that he won't stand up for his own workers so how can we expect him to stand up for us? If he keeps them on the payroll, the right-wing will try to use them as a hammer to tear down his campaign. Considering the right-wing is only good at character assassination, he may have reason to worry. I think that if he actually stood up for his people and against the digital lynch mob, he will find much more support both in the primaries and in the general election. He could do what Howard Dean did in 2004 and place an on-line fund raiser out every time they attack him or his staff.

John Edwards' official statement. My first thoughts are that the statement is too weak. He was being attacked by dishonest hate mongers who now believe that they will be able to make him appear weak on any issue. While I'm glad that Amanda and Melissa still have jobs with him, this manufactured "scandal" is so fake. No one with 6 brain cells would ever think that something I write on my personal blog has any bearing on where I work or how I do my job. Same thing here. Amanda's and Melissa's opinions are their own and not John Edwards. Now the haters on the right will just keep using out-of-context quotes against everyone just like they have since 1998.

So today is two days after 14 inches of snow fall. At about 12 noon today is the first snow plow I've seen evidence of on my street. Basically, it took about 36 hours for a snow plow to clear my street. Driving to work tomorrow should be fun.

Now for my snow day. Last night through today, we got about 14 inches of snow. Normally, I don't mind; I'll just drive slowly and curse at people who think they can go nearly the speed limit.

Today through with my Prius, I couldn't get out of my driveway. The car's 8 inch clearance wouldn't let me out over the 14 inch drifts. It got stuck at the end of my driveway.

The fun part (for my neighbors at least) was watching me dig out one side and run around the car to dig out the other side. Then I'd climb in and try to go back in but the first side had gotten snowed in again before I could get going.

I tried for about 45 minutes in the heavy snow before I quit and waited for the snow to end. After lunch I went out and dig myself out of the snow bank in about 30 minutes. At some point about 3pm I finally saw a snow plow in my neighborhood. He was "our" snow plow to clear the driveways and walks. So our driveways and walks are clear but the street still has about 14 inches of snow on it. Way too strange.

So yesterday I was part of the Democrat's Got The Vote Operation. I was basically a taxi service picking up people without cars and dropping them off at the polls and at home. It was a busy day in the morning. In the afternoon, it slowed down a lot until after 5pm. So I go home and watch the news (aka the Daily Show) and go to bed when I hear that we won the House.

So I'm happy and then I wake up and hear that we may have the Senate as well. Then later today that called it and we won both Houses back! Not only that but we won 6 governments and 10 state houses. We now have 28 governors and most of the state houses. This is important for 2010 when the party in charge of those states determine the voting districts.

Jill at Feministe has the best election round-up I'm seen today. As an aside, the Republicans did something that has never ever happened before. They didn't win one open seat or pickup any Democratic seat at any the state or federal level of government. So congrates to them on that!

Finally, all day I've had this song in my head. Seems very appropriate.

Senate approves torture for any one the President says is "evil." I am sick and sad for our country. The President will now be able to pick any body (US citizen or not) and torture them because he feels like it.

I wish that we had more Democrats with spines in the Senate. I really hope that we win one house of congress (it doesn't deserve the capital letters). It may not matter since we have a President who doesn't care about the congress or the courts. We don't know how many people we've tortured under Bush's orders. Even if we reversed this law, I doubt the President would stop. He's a rogue President and has been since day one.

Steve's Movies Reviews (2 for 1)

Just came back from seeing two movies (and dinner) with some friends. We saw "V for Venetta" and "Inside Man" tonight. Here's my quickie reviews of both.

"Inside Man" is a very entertaining heist movie. We are given a little bit more to know than the characters in the film but we are still kept in the dark about what the plan is until the end. I'm not certain why portions of the plan need to involve as many people as it did. My guess is that it was there to distract the characters and us.

"V" is a bit bigger than an entertaining story (which it is). It tries to make a statement. That statement is in one of the promos: "People shouldn't be afraid of their governments; governments should be afraid of its people." I enjoyed it (although I thought the amount of Bullet Time at the end was over-doing it).

Also, Amy said it best after the movie ended. If you see parallels to the Bush administration in this movie, that is your fears clouding your judgement rather than what the movie is really saying. It is a self-contained story with many different influences. Get over yourself.

South Dakota has just passed an abortion ban in all cases (including rape or incest) until the mother's life (not health) is in danger. This means many things to me.

First, if I ever get another girlfriend, we are never going to South Dakota where the state thinks they own her uterus. (Unless she has a reason she wishes to go since I don't like confrontation :)

Second, it appears that fathers who rape their daughters have more rights than their abused child. Sounds like good Christian values to me.

Third, only the doctors performing the abortion was punished by up to 5 years in jail. Why aren't the mothers being punished as well? If I hire a hitman to kill someone and he succeeds, I would go to jail just like the hitman if we are caught. Why are anti-choice persons not punishing the mothers?

Forth, if life starts at conception like many anti-choicers claim, why don't we investigate the nearly 60% of naturally occurring miscarriages to confirm that really were naturally occurring?

Fifth, since abortion is now illegal in South Dakota, does the state have the right to test any women trying to leave the state to determine if they are pregnant and prevent them from leaving in case they get an abortion in another state? (I hate run on sentences like that.)

Sixth, if you support the rape/incest exception, when does it go into effect? When a women claims she was raped or when we have a conviction? If the former, fine. If the later, then you don't really support the exception since most cases would not complete before the mother gives birth.

Finally, all the clinics helping women become pregnant, are they now illegal since they kill more embryos than just about anyone else?

Does anyone have the answers to my questions above?

Just a pair of random things today that I found were funny...

Tonight driving home from gym, someone called the station during the request hour for Quiet Riot's "Come on Feel the Noise". So the family-friendly station found the CD and played it, uncensored. There's a couple of F-Bombs in it so they played them straight through. After it was over the DJ said something like "I guess we weren't supposed to play that version."

Also, at lunch today I was just surfing and I came across a clip from Whose Line is It Anyway? that I laugh so hard everytime I see it. It is a game of Party Quirks in which Ryan has issues with a light bulb. Just watch it.

I've always enjoyed Bill Maher's rants. I first found him in college with Poltically Incorrect with Bill Maher on Comedy Central. Followed him to ABC until he was cancelled for saying something poltically incorrect. (Side note: Who would of thunk it?)

I try and catch his HBO show Real Time but I just love this clip. It is a great rant of his about what he calls "Kidiots". Just go and watch.

I was reading this from a series of links from Pandagon.net. A young girl of 17 was allegedly gang-raped by three men. She reported it to the police at the urging of her friends and there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute. If it ended there, that is bad enough for the victim of the crime.

But it wasn't. The police then decided to prosecute her for filing a false report because she didn't act like the "typical rape victim" so of course she's lying. That is so fucked up!! The judge apparently didn't believe the men's version of what happened nor did he believe the victim's version. The judge used the testimony of the victim's friends as evidence of her "lying" and then charged her friends with conspiracy.

How does that work exactly? They are good enough witnesses to convict but they were allegedly lying for her so they should face charges as well? It is so fucked up.

So I was driving to work this morning and gas was at $2.79. On my drive home, it was $3.19. $0.40 increase in 11 hours.

I was checking out this post to see how close I was to predicting gas prices. I apparently can't. Gas is already above what I thought it might be in two years.

First, I can't wait until September 30th for Serenity (aka FireFly) to come out. I really want to see our "Big Damn heroes" on the big screen. The new trailer came out today and I am so thrilled by it. <Men On Film>Loved it!!!!</Men On Film> As soon as possible, I'm getting that movie poster for my "geek room" (aka the spare bedroom).

While looking for that trailer, I found an interesting trailer for V For Vendetta staring Natalie Portman (in a role where she shaved her head). "Remember, remember, the fifth of November." I didn't know this but that is the first line of a British nursery rhyme about an real individual (Guy Fawkes) who attempts to commit treason against the British government. The trailer suggests a similar plot for the movie but the government doesn't appear to the good guys.

I also watched the 40 Year Old Virgin trailer again. I can never stop giggling/wincing at the sight of Steve Carrell getting his chest waxed.

Add to this the double header of Veronica Mars on CBS tonight and I'm so going to enjoy this weekend.

Steve's Defending Video Games...Again

If you've been paying attention to the news recently, they've been discussing the "Hot Coffee" mod for newest Grand Theft Auto game. I really, really wish that the media would educate themselves on the gaming scene prior to reporting it but they are too lazy to do so.

First, some clarifications. A "mod" is any change or modification to a game's compiled code used to customize or change how the game looks, sounds, or acts. Every game can have a mod. Some mods will change how a character looks or what they wear (their "skin"), while other mods will make the sounds change to sound more real. Other mods may add a new map or level to play on.

I remember modding the PC version NHL Hockey to include the real ads/scoreboard animation at the stadiums to make the game feel more real. That was very difficult since the game was not built to allow easy access to this data.

Nowadays, companies have learned that allowing gamers to mod the games increases the shelf life and profits of games. If there will be new content by many fellow gamers, other gamers will be more likely to buy the game.

In this case, RockStar Games (who makes the GTA series) created this "Hot Coffee" scene and then removed the in-game access to it. Now they either thought that removing the normal playable route to this mini-game/scene was enough or they were under a time-crunch and decided to do the easy way of removing it rather than the spending time ensuring the code was removed. They may also have done this intentionally and it has now backfired on them. I don't know as I'm not a mind reader.

Really, I wish that the media would look at the facts first. A rated "M" game (ages 17 or higher) with hookers who "work for a living", ability to car jack, hurt or kill people or cops, and language at home in a R-rated movie, included a short topless consentual sexual mini-game in which no genitals appear which took an internet mod and several hours of gameplay to find, got its rating raised to "Adults Only" (ages 18 or higher) because children, who shouldn't be playing this game anyway, might be able to find some blocky breasts. If they spent that much time trying to unlock the mini-game, they would have easily found the hardcore porn images floating through the internet.

Short version: A mod is the equivalent of you buying a book I wrote from my bookstore and writing in the margin a comment about the book. You are modifying the book that I wrote but I have no control over what you (my customer) do with the book once it no longer in my possession.

I'm so mad that I could just spit on the next Republican I see. As all of my regular readers know (that means you Jim :), there's a special election in Ohio next week pitting a scandal-ridden incombent (Republican) versus a veteran of the current Iraq War (Democrat). The election looks to be close so both parties are campaigning hard.

Yesterday during a MSNBC interview/story, the incombent claimed that she's happy that her opponent served but she stayed in her community and that's more important than serving your country.

Steve's Movie Reviews: Batman Begins

I enjoyed this movie. I think that it may be the best of the five Batman movies. The beginning bounces around a little to show flashbacks and flashbacks from within flashbacks but once Bruce is back in Gotham, it hits on all cylinders.

Spoilers follow: (Hightlight the black box to read them) I was surprised that Rachel (Katie Holmes' character) found out who Bruce was and decided to wait for Gotham to not need the Batman before they could be together. I did love how they answered the question of "where does he get those wonderful toys". Morgan Freeman's Fox was an inventor at Wayne Enterprises and Bruce places him in charge of the company. Nice way for us to know how Batman continued getting better tools and cars. I liked the actor playing the Scarecrow although I thought the Scarecrow character wasn't that great. I liked him better as Dr. Crane. He seemed scarier. Plus: "I'm Batman!" and the hint at the end of who will be the villian of the next movie.

A week or so ago, the Senate had a hearing on the Food-for-oil scandal. They had a member of Parliament appear named George Galloway. He did a great job and even did a Jack Nicklson-esque "You can't handle the truth"-type outrage at the Republicans who accused him wanting the US and UK to fail in Iraq.

Anyways, I've been following the Scopes Monkey Trial II that ended in Kansas last week. On the plus side, the Creationists looked like fools. Of course, that may be news but it was nice to see them prove to be among the least evolved humans we have. On the other hand, we are still debating evolution in 2005.

So I was reading Daily Kos and saw the link to this article. It is an article/blog post on the dinosaur fossils found in Kansas. It really is a fascinating read.

So Ann Coulter is on the cover of Time magazine this week. This is a woman (well, maybe a woman) who has "joked" about killing anyone who calls themselves a liberal, thought that Timithy McVeigh should have blown up the New York Times building instead of the one in Oklahoma.

I hate that Time has determined that a woman who lies on every page of her books deserved the cover and a non-critical article. I went and cancelled my subscription to Time to morning.

Of course, in perfect "help, I'm being oppressed" fashion, Coulter and other conservatives are complaining that the cover picture makes her look strange. That one is too easy but you notice how liberals complain about the content and she's complaining about the image.

We have the Republican being held by the balls by some "Old Testament Christians" (oxymoron much?) who think that killing judges who rule against them is good public policy. We have Republican "leaders" in Congress who must try and do what the far right wingers what so that they can run for President in 2008.

The Republicans are basically the party of "No Control Over Your Body or Lives."

Want to have an abortion for whatever reason (danger to you or wish to start a family later)? No, that's murder!

Want to prevent a pregency using birth control? No, that's murder too!

Want to have a living will to determine what extremes should be taken to prolong or end your life? No, you should live as vegetable until we feel it is unwise politically.

Want to preserve the environment so that you can teach your kids to hunt? No, but keep those guns out there for us to use as a wedge issue.

Want to get married? Fine, but not if you're one of those "icky gay people who chose to be immoral."

Want to declare bankrupcy due to medical expenses occurred by a loved one? No, you will never get out from under the debt that you have occurred.

Basically, the Republicans have become the party of the fetus right up until birth, then you're on your own; the party of the corporations; and the party of religious Freaks that only recall one versus of the Old Testament and none of the New Tesatment. Oh yea, and blowing up brown-skinned people in other countries.

The current Republican Party is a horrible joke but I'm not laughing.

At work, we discovered that one of my co-workers made a mistake that cost most of us the day of meaningful work. Wednesday night, one of my co-workers was setting up an environment for us to test a new version of the code on for the next day.

At least, he thought he was in one of our test environments. In reality, he was in our production environment (the "live" environment where our customers work) and he deleted about 8000 of our customers. Not good.

So the day was spent by him, me, and our boss tracking down what happened, what our options were to fix it, and how quickly those options could be tried. In end, we got it back up and working but we lost about 60 user ids from the last time a backup was ran.

On the plus side, they are now backing up that data on a nightky basis to prevent that probleming from occurring again.

So I'm reading this story about how safe cloned milk and meat are. I notice that they only studied 2 beef clones and 10 dairy clones. Is a dozen clones enough to warrant a headline like "Cloned Meat, Milk Nearly the Same"?

Also, do they mean that the meat and milk taste the same as each other or do they mean the same as the source?

I really don't have a problem with cloned animals as meat or other food products. I just don't think that twelve subjects is enough to use in such a study.

Here's a story on another conservative Republican thinking that killing the judges is a good idea. The group also specifically targets Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy 'cause he is the deciding vote in many cases.

This is after last week where Tom Delay claimed that "the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior." Which seems like a threat to me but he could just mean at Judgment Day. Also last week, Senator Republican John Cornyn of Texas said that he understood how judges decisions could lead to people reacting with violence.

When exactly did it become just accepted that Senators and Representatives could threaten other members of the government with death and the media barely even mentions it?

I just saw Frank Miller's Sin City this afternoon. It is a good movie but not one with any happy endings for our heros. Of course, that's to be expected in a film noir.

On the other hand, Brittany Murphy looks good in her underware, Jessica Alba looks incredible in ass-less chaps, and Carla Gugino looks great topless.

The one that surprised me was Alexis Bledel as a hooker. She's on "Gilmore Girls" as Rory and in this, she is nothing like Rory at all. She did very good.

Dragons!

I just finished watching the Animal Planet's special on dragons. I really enjoyed it. The idea was an entire "What if..." Documentary. Basically, what if a body of a dragon was discovered surrounded by human bodies. What happened?

In the process, they determined how a dragon could fly and breathe fire. They also imagined how they might live and evolve from the serpent-like Chinese dragons to the more familiar dragons in the Middle Ages. Overall, it was very cool. Imagine using the effects found in Jurassic Park (but advanced by a decade or so) to create realistic-looking dragons. It was very cool!

I bought a new microwave

I went to Sears and bought a under the counter microwave oven. It will also cook regular food. It'll be delivered in about 2 weeks.

The fun part was that the sales people couldn't actually order it 'cause the model numbers changed. They tried the old numbers and the computer said that it was discontinued. They tried the new numbers and the computer couldn't find them. Eventually, they called someone and found out the number weren't inputted yet and they put the one model number I wanted into the system.

My high school basketball team was down here for the State tournament. Last year they finished in second place to Chicago (Leo). This year, they again came in second to another (different) Chicago team.

I was at the game on Friday night. I saw a handful of people I recognized but I could barely remember their names. I hate it when that happens. Besides, I was still a little sick (I've had a cold all week) so I didn't really feel up to socializing.

So I'm at work today feeling sick 'cause, well, I am. After a particularly big sneeze, I'm cleaning my glasses. My Project Manager looks over at me doing this and asks, "Since when have you been wearing glasses?" I was a little stunned that my Project Manager, who has been with us since September and sits next to me, has never noticed that I wear glasses before today. Then it hit me.

I have the ability to make my glasses become invisible. Now granted this is not as cool a power as instant healing or controlling the weather but it is a start. Now if I practice very hard, I may be able to make my nose disappear to spite my face.

Friday I woke up with some kind of stomache aliment. In others words, I couldn't keep any food down. I called in sick and got a fever over the course of day. I can barely remember Saturday. I remember cooking dinner (and nearly burning the chicken when I fell asleep) and watching the Crow. The rest of day seems to be a blur.

At least, today I woke up feeling better. Just a minor headache.

My Poker Afternoon

Eariler this week, I was invited to a poker game hosted by a former college roommate. We started at 12:30 PM today. I ended up winning the whole thing (5 people at $20 buy-in). Here's who played and how they lost:

John: I took John out on the forth hand. He bet much and lost on the second hand so he had about half of his chips going into this hand. I got a pocket pair of 7s. The flop included my other two 7s and a three. John bet first and immediatly went All-In. So I'm sitting there with 4 of a kind of 7s and the best that I figure that John could get was 4 3s so I alone stayed. As it turned out, John had pocket 3s and thought that his Full House would win.

Duane: Duane lost to Mel (our host) by trying to bluff his way out of a pair. He had a pair of 10s and bluffed to Mel and lost to a pair of Aces. He only had a few chips left and he went All-In and lost to Mel the next hand.

Mel: I beat Mel when I bluffed with an Ace high. I scared him and Tim out of a big pot with my Ace High hand. Then Tim beat Mel after several hands of Check-Raising Mel. Finally, Mel with just a Full House went All-In and I beat him, 9s over 8s to 8s over 10s.

Tim: Tim and I tried to wear each other out by betting low and conservative. I lucked out on one hand. Tim had two pair to my single pair but I got a Flush on the River. Just a few hands later, Tim went All-In with another Two Pair and I had Three of a Kind (three 9s) to his 9s and Jacks.

So that was how I spent my afternoon winning $100 from a old friend and 3 new friends (or victims, your call.)

So I just watched the latest episode of "The OC" and I haven't enjoyed an episode of it this much since Christmauka of this season. I think that this episode was better than that one. Even before our very happy ending (Seth & Summer aka Sethummer kissing in the rain ala Spiderman), this was just fun episode.

Boyz II Men songs 'cause characters were depressed, one character outing herself and her girlfriend to her Evil Mom rendering Evil Mom speechless (that's a first), Evil Mom admitting that she "experimented" when she was younger in a funny "Too Much Info" moment. It was just a fun, good episode.

I hope that it stays on track.

So I was looking at reports of Bush's budget and I noticed that it increases the Abstinence-only education budget. This after Bush said that he would only increase funds to programs that work. He reduces funds to programs that sponser poor but smart children to go to college but a program that is killing kids* gets more money.

* The Abstinence-only programs have been shown to reduce teens ability to understand how to use condoms or other forms of birth control. Teen pregnancy and STDs have risen greatly in the last 4 years after declining for the previous 6.

Tomorrow and Sunday -- Sunny in the mid 60s.
Monday and Fat Tuesday -- lower 70s.

I go in late Feburary and the weather is rainy and 50s. I don't go in early Febuary and it is wonderful weather. Does that seem right?

What happened to gas prices?

I bought gas for the car on Sunday at about $1.73. I was driving by the same gas station today and it was $1.92. What happened in this week?

Strange week at work

Work has been a bit strange this week. In a previous post, I mentioned how we finished our project and were thrilled at being "done". Well, we missed some functionality and were working on fixing/adding it. So we had a goal of finishing it at 8am Thursday. We almost got it just didn't have one part (the writing to the disk part) complete by then.

But here's the strange part, nearly everyday this week, just as the work day was near closing, we had a Production issue which needed to be fixed. Which is very unusual for us. We normally get about one issue a week and 3 out of 4 times, they are easy issues. This week we've had severs failing to start, data out of sync for 6 weeks but no one noticed and it must be fixed by Monday, and a support call this morning (but sent to me at 3PM today) from a customer who completely forgot that the error occurred this morning. Kinda shows how important that issue was, huh?
